What describes lightweight construction and sandwich panels?

In the construction industry, especially in industrial construction, sandwich panels have established themselves as an economical solution for space-enclosing roof and wall components. Such sandwich constructions have two thin cover layers, which are connected by a thick, low-density core layer for shear resistance. Sheet steel is generally used for the outer layers in the construction industry. In Germany, the most common core materials are rigid polyurethane foams (PUR/PIR) and mineral wool. The interaction of both components as a composite material enables high load-bearing capacities with a low dead weight and good building physics properties. Sandwich panels fulfil both load-bearing, insulating and sealing functions in the building shell.

Sandwich panel research at the department

Since the professorship of Prof Jungbluth in 1972, the research work at the Institute for Steel Construction and Materials Mechanics has played a significant role in the rise of this construction method. This tradition continues to this day at the Department of Steel Construction under the direction of Prof Lange. In addition to mechanical phenomena in sandwich construction that have not yet been fully described, current projects are also investigating the development of new markets through innovative shaping and the use of sustainable core materials.
